The Production of headwaters

Each spring semester, students in Language 374: Literary Magazine Production select, edit, and design content for the annual issue of Headwaters, which is funded by UNC Asheville's Campus Commission, printed by BP Solutions, and supported in a myriad of ways by UNC Asheville's Department of English.

The History of headwaters

First published in 1997, Headwaters annually showcases the talented writing and artwork produced by undergraduate students at UNC Asheville. The magazine has won Best in Show at the North Carolina College Media Association, as well as numerous individual awards, and has featured the work of prominent authors like Wiley Cash, Mesha Maren, and Grey Lajoie.

There has nearly always been a literary magazine at this institution. In 1929, two years after the founding of Asheville-Biltmore College (UNCA’s predecessor), Bluets began publishing student poems, essays, and stories, enjoying 35 years of national recognition for its excellent quality. In addition to featuring the voices of undergraduate students, including Wilma Dykeman, the magazine engaged the vibrant arts scene in Asheville, interviewing F. Scott Fitzgerald, publishing an essay by John Ehle, and featuring many other notable artists in the local community.

For the next three decades various magazines — Images, The Rag & Bone Shop, Fury, and others — maintained a robust presence at UNC Asheville, providing a home for student writers and artists.

Headwaters is proud to participate in this rich tradition of creative arts at UNCA and in western North Carolina.
